Charity and Character: Meals on Wheels

Last month, we were delighted to spend some time at one of the best events we've yet had the opportunity to attend. Fort Mason has been home to many excellent wine tastings and even a robotics competition, but it's hard to top a large-scale reception and dinner that brings the best chefs and bartenders and wineries together for a one-night extravaganza.

That's precisely what we found at the 24th Annual Star Chefs & Vintners Gala fundraiser, perhaps San Francisco's biggest fundraising event, where the proceeds go to fund Meals on Wheels. Held about a month ago, this event raised over $1.4 million for the worthwhile charity, which will provide over 350,000 meals for homebound senior citizens.

Tickets started at $450, and ran up to $20,000, but for those looking for a good cause to support, the regular events run by Meals on Wheels offer an amazing incentive to support. The live and silent auctions offered some fantastic prizes- among them, a private dinner with celebrity chefs or a complete wine collection that could fill a good-size cellar. Even if you can't attend an event like this, we strongly hope you'll support some of the sponsors, including the restaurants and chefs who attended- it reads like a "Who's Who" list and includes folks from SPQR, Gary Danko, The Slanted Door, Greens, Spruce, and many more. Even the dessert reception featured local highlights like Dynamo Donuts, Kara's Cupcakes, and Humphry Slocombe!
